Twenty-two EU member States signed a Declaration on partnership in the field of blockchain

On Friday, April 13, more than 22 EU States signed the Declaration on the establishment of the European partnership in the field of blockchain technologies.
The project participants intend to exchange experience and knowledge in the technical and regulatory field, to prepare the launch of a single application for the EU using distributed registry technology for the public and private sectors.

"In order to take advantage of the opportunities of blockchain technologies and avoid a fragmented approach, the participants of this Declaration agree to cooperate in the creation of the European partnership for the development of blockchain infrastructure, which will help to improve the digital services that are credible and focused on the user within the single market," the Declaration signed by 22 States.
The agreement provides that the first cross-border actions should start by the end of 2019.

Meanwhile, European Commission Vice President Andrus Ansip called on EU countries to commit themselves to the development of blockchain technology, which, along with artificial intelligence (AI), "is among the areas where Europe plays a leading role." He said this on Tuesday at Digital day 2018 in Brussels.

"I would like to see that the EU countries assume similar obligations (as in the case of AI) with respect to blockchain technology, which is now leaving the laboratories and going to the mainstream. As with AI, we should make the most of this opportunity for innovation," said Ansip.
He also stressed the importance of investments in the development of blockchain, AI, digital health and other areas of digitalization of the economy, adding that the existing funding is not enough.

In March, the European Commission published the "FINTECH development Plan" for the coming years, including blockchain technology and clarification of legal issues related to smart contracts and initial coin offerings (ICO).
